American Steel Wül Trivia

Question:

Who is this American and what is significant about her road win?

Answer:

Audrey McElmury- she was the first American to win a world road race championship (1969).

Peter Flanders (SW Trivia Mastermind) posted the correct answer.

Bonus Trivia:

When Audrey claimed the world title that day in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1969 the race officials were not anticipating an American taking the rainbow jersey so she had to wait on the podium in the rain for 35 mins. while the officials scrambled to find an LP recording of the Star-Spangled Banner. She has since been inducted into the Cycling Hall of Fame and held the World Hour Record for 20 years.

    1. I am proud to say that I rode regularly with Audrey back in 1962 in the hills around UC Riverside. At that time her potential was still undeveloped, but she was a great camarad. We never saw another serious cyclist. She and I were outsiders. She died in 2013. I miss her much. Dennis schneider
