San Juan Highlands

We cycled upon the immortal Highlanders -McCao & McCaletti on our accent
into the Highlands. The Gren - like an angel, gracefully ascended into the heavens above chasing the Grey Hound who used the big ring.

Good enough for Fausto

by Maynard Hershon

Would I like the old days back?
Will I ride my inch-pitch hack
Till they bring the Yardbirds back?
Do I love my Pletcher rack?
And do I want the old days back?
By Bianchi green - I do.

Do I like my Dettos black?
Am I tattooed (twice) "Mafac?"
Will I ride my early Sachs
Till the paneled downtube cracks?
So do I want the old days back?
By Kelly's clips - I do.

Am I put off by Kestrels act?
Do I take the Coni book as fact?
Will I ride 40 holes in back
Till proper wooden rims come back?
Do I wan the old days back?
On Gino's health I do.

Do I defend, face-to-face,
Merckx's "real-bike" hour record pace?
Do my shifters clamp in place?
Do I forget I never raced, just
ground along at tourist pace
But passed by women, always chased?
But do I want Dura-Ace erased?
Trust me; yes I do.

In my world short would all be black,
All young guys would ride the track,
And fix my silks at a buck a crack.
See, I speak Campy, but my voice is cracked,
I'm Clipped and strapped but I'm off the back,
I learned the lingo but forgot the knack,
I'm retro suffering in the laughing pack.
Getting dropped is what I do.

Enough already with the sordid facts;
I've admitted I want the old days back:
Like a red Bob Jackson in Santa's pack,
Beige-box pieces, front to back.
Cinelli, Bindas, S.L. blacks,
Each thread lubed in warm bee's wax.
We love our dreams but live by facts;
I'd settle for a BOB-club fanny pack.

1988 Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara

Matt Kissinger was the elder statesman at age 15 and I was 14 and some
change. Check out the Spokesman / Coastal Sportive jersey Hough gave
me from his shop on Cedar St. and Jentes gave me that sweat lid and
Rudy Projects. I was on a bridgestone mb-1 that I bought for $1,650. I
sold alot of Christmas trees that year!

Appleton Valley Spin

The Gren and I peddled by Apple's house to say hello and we noted no Apple, a bottle of chain lube, and a rag. I bet my pay check that he was on Felton Empire (sub 20 mins from library to stop sign).

RIP VDB (1974 to 2009)

Check out this tribute to the late great VDB.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsBx-re7Nrs

"It must have been when I was about 19 or 20 and went out training with a friend on the Belgian borders. As we spun along, out of nowhere this skinny blond kid was on our back wheel. He looked about 14. He was still there 15 minutes later, so we picked up speed. He just sat there, so we picked up the pace again. It was still no problem for him. I looked over my shoulder and he gave me a half-mocking, half-friendly grin. In the end, we went as hard as we could to try to get rid of him and teach the little brat a lesson, because by now he was getting a bit too cocky for our tastes. But whatever we did, he still hung on. After about an hour, we came into a village called Ploegsteert, at which point he came alongside with real arrogance and said 'OK, I'm back home now, so 'bye. By the way, I'm Frank Vandenbroucke.' Neither of us had ever met a kid like him."[5]

Pre-Ride Calorie Intake

Thank you Caletti's for my pre-ride Birthday treat!

My mom made me the most amazing cheese cake this afternoon from a family recipe from our relatives in San Giovanni, Italy (it was epic after 6 hours of riding)!

She had an Italian story from San Giovanni translated into English for
me:

"Something we used to do in my town just to have fun. Nothing extra
special to have fun- you just need your health and if you have your
health and a pair of shoes you can travel the world accompanied by
yourself and to make life sweeter just sing a song- when you sing a
flower will bloom in your heart and when the sun goes down for the
night continue to sing even if your voice is small and off tune- your
heart will feel like a great singer."

Super Dave and Tyson earned "Beast" status today finishing with Bonny Doon.

SIERRA AZUL Open Space Preserve

I did some solo exploring today and found myself on top of Mt. El Sombroso
(37' 10.70' N by 121' 54.54' W). This was a beast of a climb as I was broke off at the top!
